In some associations and leagues, a web presence is required for activities such as entering events and uploading scores and results. Often, there is a requirement by an association, league or major sporting body to have certain policies or codes of conduct made available online.
The penalties associated with non-compliance can include fines to the club or results or scores not being ratified.
However, a web presence can also be used in instances where a club is not required to enact a particular suggestion or service offer by its association, league or major sporting body, but sees some advantage in doing so. For instance,
- Some clubs still use 'official' online results or score entry systems provided by their sporting governing bodies when they are not required to as they usually provide an excellent means of keeping track of this data.
- Some clubs post their policies and codes of conduct on their website so that they can easily be viewed by members and supporters.
- Clubs may be choose to store important documents and personal (private) details online. One way that this can be done online is by using The Cloud, which can allow for secure storage, with access to data provided to only those who are entitled to view it.
- Clubs are also increasingly being asked to carry out, audit and record specific club-based activities that they carry out for insurance purposes. Sometimes these are supported by checklists that need to be filled out. It is worthwhile checking to see if there are online versions that can be filled in which automatically archive these audits.
- In athletics, online registration with the major sporting body is required before club members are able to enter accredited events. This, however, has the added advantage that the peak sporting body provides online access to the results of such events for registered athletes.
